I am SO confused about all of this... (Major ending foreshadowing in Citadel DLC)

Post by DoomsdayDevice on Thu Mar 07, 2013 9:32 pm

So I kept myself away from the internet for three days, because I was going to play the DLC and wanted to stay spoiler free. I knew I was going to have little time to play, and that it was probably going to take me three days to finish it. And it did. I haven't even done everything in there, anyway...

First off (and y'all are probably going to hate me for this, but screw you), I loved this DLC for what it was. The clone storyline didn't make a whole lot of sense, but it was pretty cool anyway. The social part, as little sense as it made within the given timeline, was absolutely fantastic. I watched Thane's memorial through my tears, I laughed my arse off at drunk Grunt in the shower, etcetera. So many memorable moments. But let me get to the point...

What confused the HELL out of me, was the CRAZY amount of MAJOR ending foreshadowing in this DLC.

From the first moment you enter the apartment, EVERY SINGLE ONE of Anderson's datapads is giving you clue after clue after clue. Everything is foreshadowed! Even the ending choice is explained!

In the ANN interview, Anderson explains exactly that a good leader always tries to save everyone, but there will be a moment where you can't. And that when you're not prepared to sacrifice people, the price you will end up paying might well be a lot higher.

He even talks about how some leaders, no matter how good they always were, will end up making the wrong decision in their defining moment. Oh, and "THE GALAXY TENDS TO MAKE EXAMPLES OF THEM". Shocked

He talks about how many people are concerned about Shepard coming back alive, FFS!

All that stuff about how your instincts can save you when you don't know what to do....

And then when he says something along the lines of "Sometimes all people need, is to get a pat on the back and be told that they did good, and that everything is going to be all right." I mean, COME ON!

I can go on and on. EVERY SINGLE one of those recordings was foreshadowing the ending!!!

The biggest jawdropper was when Zaeed and Samara were discussing that painting, and Zaeed described what it made him think of... and word for word it reminded me of the breath scene... I had tears in my eyes, goosebumps all over, I looked at that painting and realized it looked like what Shepard would see, waking up in the rubble.

Zaeed: "It makes me feel uneasy, like when you're alone in the dark, lying in wait, and a cold wind brushes across your face, like the kiss of death."

And at that moment I just KNEW I was going to get to see Shepard get out of that rubble. I just KNEW.

EDIT: Check out this Jack quote from the romance content:

Jack: "Good enough so that if you're ever hurt, barely breathing, lying under a pile of rubble at the ass end of this war, you're gonna have..."

WINNING

However, as I finished the DLC I started having doubts, there was just so much content in there, that I couldn't imagine there would be more post-ending.

Sure enough, I played on through Cronos and Priority: Earth today, did the ending again, hoping for maybe a ten second clip or something at the end, but wasn't really surprised to see there wasn't anything.

So I'm just terribly confused right now.

Bioware, if you're not planning on going anywhere with the ending, then WHY FOR FUCK'S SAKE DO YOU KEEP GIVING ME HOPE WITH ALL THIS GOD DAMN FORESHADOWING!!!!!

I don't get it.

Is it just me? Did anyone else have a similar experience?

I knew you'd come back and bring optimism right now HJ.

I don't doubt most of us, myself included, are overlooking any IT foreshadowing there may be.

What do they say about the painting?

Yeah I saw some of the foreshadowing of the ending. Way too much in order to just be a coincidence. I dont know why they would do it. Still want to hope for a "project X" but very doubtful if not impossible now. I think BW just like to do things like this to us.

I haven't written it down exactly, but I made a save... so I'll soon go back and write down all the memorable quotes.

There's a SHIT LOAD of ending foreshadowing in there, my friend. Even in the clone storyline.

Either I still have the IT Cypher, or I am becoming the victim of my own imagination.

At this point I feel like I'm ready for the padded room. And the medication. Lots of it.

I feel insane too. Isn't it wonderful! *rocks back and forth*

Missed you. Glad you didn't quit out on here.

1 - I direct you here. Bump it! http://indoctrinationtheory.forumotion.co.uk/t296-starchild-by-wintersun-analysis-continued-citadel
I think this ENTIRE THING IS PLANNED.

2 - http://indoctrinationtheory.forumotion.co.uk/t295-koobismo-s-citadel-review-the-pinnacle-of-fanservice A nice review. I think Koobismo's not really an ITer, but he understands writing enough that he knows something is 'up', but doesn't want to alienate people.

3 - Someone just posted in chat, and I agree with the strangeness:
http://kotaku.com/5989141/dead-space-3s-awakened-dlc-brings-back-those-horrific-hallucinations
(with green and red eyes)

"Next week's Awakened DLC is an epilogue to Dead Space 3's main storyline that pits Isaac and partner character John Carver against crazy Unitology cultists on the derelict wreck of the Terra Nova. At a recent preview, an EA representative told Kotaku that head trips are going to be a major part of Awakened and that those who play as Isaac will experience up more hallucinations in the DLC than in the whole game. You can still play co-op, too."

From the comments:
"Epilogue sounds like "true ending".
Welcome to the New EA."
"Did you get to the end of the game and say "Wow, where's the ending? That didn't feel like closure...""
"The ending of that game was so awful and ludicrous, I would have to say yes, as someone who played all 3 games, read the books, and watched both movies, I didn't feel much of a sense of closure."

Sound familiar? ;)

I came back here after playing Citadel hoping to hear about clues I'd missed or overlooked in the moment. So glad to hear it's in there. I noticed a lot while playing, but after coming out the other side I've been too overwhelmed with conflicting emotions that it's hard to pull those details back out.

Mainly I'm distracted by my confusion at the placement of Citadel within the narrative. So disappointed by that, yet so elated at the amazing moments within, I just don't know how to reconcile the different feelings I have.

Anyway, all that to say: bring forth the evidence, and let the speculation resume!

Yes, some foreshadowing.

Andersson's indoctrination is practically confirmed now.
Cu.Forge.IT - sign, sounded like a challenge.
"Kai Leng" advertisement was odd.

First song that plays in your apartment when you turn stereos on, isn't it the same odd song you can play on Normandy?

Hells to the yeah. You can count on it.

Yes... I love that song. Wish I could hear the lyrics somewhat better. Something about choices and... voices?

Anyway, it's been stuck in my head for three days now.

And yes, we're good. I may have just become more confident in an IT reveal than I have ever been before.

Because a ton of ITers have given up on it now.

Well, technically, she could just be referring to Shepard being alive, which is already in the endings, but I definitely believe it's IT foreshadowing.

Even more so because she also says :"You're gonna blow the Reapers to hell, and then you're going to come back and take me out dancing." Even after the endings were written, she's supporting destroy and destroy only.
