So, Matt Smith is bowing out of Dr Who after 4 years in the role - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-22741493

I'll be sad to see him go. I was a bit skeptical of his replacement of David Tennant, but he quickly grew on me. Any thoughts about who might be a good replacement for him?

Perhaps even....

British brevity applies to actors as well as shows it seems. On the rare occasion of a long running british series you can't seem to hold onto actors for more than a few years.

Yeah, I thought it was a surprisingly short tenure. Especially considering how young Smith is. I'd have thought he could have gotten a steady pay cheque from the role for years. Maybe he got cold feet about being typecast like Eccleston did?

He was there about as long as Tennant, perhaps he left for the same reason, that if I don't go now I'll be here the rest of my life.

I think it's time for a female doctor.

Nah, just because it's technically possible doesn't mean they should. And it would probably upset too many people, though Moffat is pretty daring so you never know.

Davies introducing an omnisexual and upping the presence of alternate sexualities in the series probably pissed off a lot of people too.

I'd be quite interested to see them try a female doctor. I suppose it all depends on the actress they hire. I didn't think Matt Smith would work at first, too young and "unconventionally handsome", but he'd won me over by the end of his first episode.

I must admit, I can't think of any actresses off the top of my head who could fill the role. They need someone who can be eccentric without being irritatingly "ditzy", but can still fit the bill when the Doctor needs to be intimidating. I'm sure there's someone out there who could do it though.

Thinking about it maybe a slightly older actress would be suitable. Ironically Alex Kingston would have make a good Doctor. Her turn as River Song had a good mix of confidence and cheeky humour.

I didn't like the first two or three Smith episodes, but I loved the actor from the start. He only improved with the writing.

Some speculation in the Grauniad about a female doctor -

Funnily enough, back before Matt Smith was announced, I remember thinking that Sue Perkins might make a good female doctor.

Matt Smith thanks the fans and crew. Why he does it in the street with pieces of paper we'll never know.

Perhaps he's a Bob Dylan fan?

But my God, crew-cuts are not his friend!
