Your Favorite Anime of all Time?
Hello
Thought I might as well start up a thread for anime, then those who want to discuss it can gather here and those who dont can avoid it as that caused some tension in the last thread.
But as for the topic at hand (note I am only adding series, not films to my list as if I dident I would be adding almost every Studio Ghibli movie :D ):
My favorite anime bar none is Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann:
The combination of epic action, rousing speeches and complete disregard of logic simply clicked with me when i watched it. Though maybe that is that despite its silliness the anime can get very serious at times and it has some genuine tear jerker moments along the way. Still though nothing beat watching two universe sized Mecha facing down each others in a battle of unrivaled scale even as the laws of physics cries in the corner.
Another favorite of mine is Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood:
I watched the original which while good did not reach nearly the same level as Brotherhood (in my opinion). It just felt like a more complete story with some great episodes all around.
A newer favorite of mine has to be Sword Arts Online, an anime released fairly recently. I wont spoil anything, so read on without fear:
Sword Arts Online takes place in 2020 in Japan where the invention of full dive technology (full virtual reality) is reaching its peak with the release of the full dive MMO Sword Arts Online. 10.000 players enter it on launch day among them the main character whose in game character is named Kirito (which is the name we are mostly going to associate with him, I cant actually remember his real name). But the players find themselves trapped in the game with no way to lock out and soon are also told that death in the game means their brain is fried in real life. Only way out is to clear the games 100 levels.
In many ways this is simply an adventure anime, but the fact that they are in a game changes the rules a bit and several events (and some jokes) make use of the fact that it is a videogame ultimately. But the focus is always on Kirito and how he deals with the situation and develops as times passes in the game along with a few people close to him. The life and death game changes him and many others which is seen.
This anime could have been really great, but sadly the second half is much weaker than the first. It is not outright bad, just weaker. I would recommend giving it a try.
And that is all for now from me :D

Got to tell ya, don't really watch anime, so I'm going to go with the one I have the most experience with. Pokemon.

Ghost in the Shell (the original) and the first Appleseed film. I really like the cyberpunk end of anime - Cyber City OEDO 808 was pretty cool as well. Haven't watched a lot of anime since about 10 years ago though, so I'd love some recommendations for some more recent stuff.
Re: Your Favorite Anime of all Time?
There can only be one number one for me:
The work, which becomes a new genre itself, will be called... "COWBOY BEBOP"
I feel bad ranking the rest because they are so different that it would not feel right comparing them. Cowboy Bebop is just so good that it can't be beaten by any of them.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann comes close, but not quite. I live by the lessons of Gurren Lagann.
I love Gundam, but especially the Universal Century shows and Gundam Wing. For me, G Gundam is the guilty pleasure it should be.
Persona 4: The Animation is pretty great (I'm also a Persona fanboy). It even has a couple of IT-like scenarios they added since the show can't test viewers the same way the game tests players.
I love Black Lagoon and Trigun (I own the latter). If I ever make a renegade Femshep, she will be Revy, and a paragon Broshep would be Vash. I own Evangelion too, but I have a hard time getting in the mood to watch it because of the tone. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is my idea of a perfect cyberpunk setting, and the Major was a primary influence in how I played my Femshep.
The funniest anime I have seen is FLCL. I can't think of anything that came close.

K-ON! is the only anime I've ever watched, so I'd have to second this. Its a pretty good show. Way too cute.

My favorite is Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, though it changes with Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion depending on my mood.

Actually, it's the second. The first place was the "Why did you choose your Avatar" page.Fur28 wrote:i knew this would be the first place you were going to post :)Selim Bradley wrote:My favorite is Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, though it changes with Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion depending on my mood.

Ah yeah forgot Code Geass myself, such a great series and an absolutely fantastic ending.

In terms of anime films my favorite is Paprika. If you liked Inception I highly encourage you to check it out as Nolan mentioned it as an inspiration. Metacritic even listed it as one of the top 25 scifi films of all time.

Re: Your Favorite Anime of all Time?
Going with anime films as well I can say immediately that I really like most movies from Studio Ghibli and especially the ones done by Hayao Miyasaki.
My absolute favorite is without doubt Princess Mononoke, a masterpiece of animated film making and my favorite movie of all time.
After that I would place Spirited Away as my second as it is also a fantastic movie, though I dont consider it as good as Princess Mononoke.
As for my third...I really dont know...probably Grave of the Fireflies, not so much because it is my favorite movie, but more due to the impact it left on me :(

Re: Your Favorite Anime of all Time?
I'd have to say Dragon Ball Z The abridged series. ;)
In all seriousness though, Serial Experiments Lain was a trip.
Hellsing Ultimate also just released its last OAV and its a pretty awesome series.

Re: Your Favorite Anime of all Time?
I love DBZ/YGO/Naruto Abridged :P
But for real ones:
-Witch Hunter Robin (it never panned out, and its pace was too slow)
-Cowboy Bebop (only saw the movie, but loved it)
-Persona 4 one actually looks really faithful to the game, and even enhances it, unlike a certain PARAGON LOST...

Re: Your Favorite Anime of all Time?
The current season is pretty good imo, I'm watching Akuma no Riddle, Black Bullet, Date A Live II, Escha & Logy no Atelier, Gochuumon wa usagi Desu Ka?, Gokukoku no Brynhildr, Kanojo ga Flag wo Oraretara, Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei, Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to The Animation, Mekakucity Actors, Nisekoi (winter season anime, still airing), No Game No Life, Ryuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin and Selector Infected Wixoss
My Top 5 of those are DAL2, Mekakucity Actors, Nisekoi, NGNL and Ryuugajou Nanana, so I definitely recommend those

*moved from KS thread, post from Mar 19, 2014*
Finished Clannad yesterday in a sudden marathon spasm.
Being aware that posting anything slightly spoilery would mean certain death for me, so I'm keeping it simple:
It's been a while since I have been so captivated by a drama.
Yes, there will be feels.
For me, though, the plot had elements that went beyond mere "feels from tear jerking". While I certainly started watching it because of the show's image, Clannad ended up reminding me that there used to be a type of story and characters that I had been looking for for a long time. Turns out Clannad was the answer.
I'm considering playing the VN, too, now (which the anime is based on), although it's also known to be pretty long; which for me would mean eternity.
But for now, I plan on watching Clannad's second season first: 'Clannad: After Story. I am curious to find out if it really deserves the high rating it receives. After all, it's supposedly almost as good as Steins;Gate...we shall see about that. >.>
EDIT: It was nice. So it's definitely among my favorite animus.
Also Steins;Gate.
And Kara no Kyoukai/Garden of Sinners.
And Shaft's Monogatari series.
And Lucky Star.

After Little Busters, I need to watch Maeda Jun's 3rd anime, Clannad, which is famous for its sadness and some of you already heard/know about, but I'll get to that when I watch it. That won't happen for a few months though, I always need a break after feels stuff
