Completely agree. I remember being totally blown away when I finally reached that battle. Awesome moment in my gaming life.Rifneno wrote:...I will say I consider One-Winged Angel to be the most important or influential track in gaming history.

Once my blood pressure stabilized I could see that part of your point. It was a world of difference.Rifneno wrote:...to an actual recording of a full orchestra with exquisitely done chanting. It was an unbelievable leap in quality.
Nice remix! Now that you've opened that pandora's box, I'll have to work an occasional remix into my posts.Rifneno wrote:Re: Forever Rachel's attention. I prefer the Project Majestic Mix version. Here's a youtube link.
My personal favorite: Theophany's Bioluminescence from the Super Metroid remix album "Harmony of a Hunter".

I don't really like FF8 at all. Couldn't get past first disk.
(I like FF7 but also couldn't get past first disk for other reasons)
Favorite ones are FF6, 9, 10. Each partially due to personal nostalgia.

I envy you. I forced myself to pull through and finish it, expecting it to get better. It didn't. 8 and 13 were both just unforgivable. 12 was my favorite I suppose. I loved the MMORPG feel.SwobyJ wrote:I don't really like FF8 at all. Couldn't get past first disk.

12 is in the middle for me. It could have been one of the best if it was given the dev time that was requested. (I guess 1-2 more years?)
It's good at least. I don't regret playing it at all.

Re: favourite video game tracks
After remaking 4 for both DS and PSP, they're now remaking the sequel to 4.
This is after 1 and 2 got several compilation remakes and 3 got a full DS remake. Someone at squenix really hates 5 and 6 it seems, GBA ports (which 4 also got) are the most recent attention either of them have gotten.
6 is my favourite of the one's I've played for the record, though I've only played 3, 5, 6 and 13.

Wow, I forgot how nice a soundtrack God of War has sometimes.
This theme, the music for the final boss battle of the second game, Zeus, is just awesome. If we ever get a real boss battle against Harbinger, I hope we get a properly epic theme.

Re: favourite video game tracks
I'm in a Metal Gear mood at the moment.
Metal Gear Solid 2 - Main Theme
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiPon8lr48U
It's a great overture that is catchy and memorable. I kind feel like saluting when I hear it, too.
Metal Gear Solid 3 - Way to Fall
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9hagVL-__c
A great soulful ending song filled with feels. The fact that the feels don't get completely overshadowed by "Debriefing" right before it speaks to its quality.
Metal Gear Solid V - Here's To You
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T--JS16uSV8
He actually used this song in MGS4 originally, but it was a much more depressing and slow version. I think the difference between the tone of the two versions tells you everything you need to know about how Kojima feels about the games now as compared to then.
Metal Gear Rising - A Stranger I Remain
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sp_TGn3eo4s
I like metal sound with female vocals, and it was inspired by one of my favorite books, Camus's The Stranger.
And just for fun:

I just wanna say, the post length is getting kind ridiculous here. I personally would prefer it if people would just post a handful of songs and actually include some introductory comments about what they are posting.

Re: favourite video game tracks
I disliked FF12 for that same reason...the MMO like combat just felt stiff and slow. Sure it was technically faster than the turn based battle systems, but compared to the amount of enemies encountered just getting anywhere I felt the combat was just way to slow. It dragged out the areas and to me it felt like an eternity before you got anywhere plot relevant.Rifneno wrote:I envy you.
(I like FF7 but also couldn't get past first disk for other reasons)
Favorite ones are FF6, 9, 10. Each partially due to personal nostalgia.
Decent FF game, not my cup of tea though.
My favorite ones were FF VI and IX. Do not even try to talk to me about FFXIII...
But anyway, on topic:
Wonderful 101: Theme Song
The theme song for Wonderful 101 plays on the games tittle screen and a few times during the game, usually at the climax off boss battles. It is a bit of a silly song, but I find it has its own crazy charm like a Power Rangers theme or similar. Also once you hear it come on just as one of the (usually) around 20 min long epic boss battles is nearing its end, playing in the background as you deliver the final blow it is undeniably quite epic. This is only taken up to eleven when the start of it plays for the final part of the final boss.

Great choices from OCRemix. That's probably my favorite Mega Man remix of all time. If I had to choose a runner up, it would be "Let There Be Light" by Cerrax from the Maverick Rising album.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcvhK7ukmek
The energy that flows out of that piece gets me jazzed every time I hear it. One of my favorite pieces to experience while driving. The Maverick Rising album has so many great songs, it's one of the few that I can just load up, hit random, and listen happily for hours on end. If I had to point out one more from the album, it would be Sparkplugs by Level99.

There are certainly many OCRemix albums that stand out, but the other I'd like to highlight would be Theophany's Majora's Mask remix album "Time's End". Being created by a single artist certainly helps this album flow from track to track and maintain a consistent mood and feel. I really have to be in a certain frame of mind to be able to listen to it. It's so compelling that it immediately takes me out of whatever I'm doing. You know the feeling, when you realize you've been staring at something inconsequential for four or five minutes straight, you feel differently than you did before, far more somber, and it's difficult to pick up where you left off.
Specifically "Terrible Fate" is the track that really transports me.

I happened to be heavily into Dark Souls lore when I first came across this piece (thanks to Raistlin and Hrothdane). Inevitable end is a big theme in that game, and this piece captures the feeling of desperate futility that staring into that approaching abyss must be like. More recently listening to this song conjures imagined scenes of how learning of a real life apocalypse might appear; when you realize your plans for the future are meaningless, and all that matters is finding those you love and spending what time you have left with them. Yeah, so, not something I can listen to often.
Then "Time's End", the title track from that album, kind of wraps that all up with what I'd imagine to be the final moments before the "event".

I think either of these tracks would work well in a Mass Effect setting as well, from the perspective of a civilian learning of, and then experiencing a Reaper invasion or something along those lines. Anyway, on a brighter note, thanks for keeping this thread going. It's always fun hearing about new music, why someone enjoys it, and then getting to experience it yourself.

Re: favourite video game tracks
There's been some absolutely amazing sountracks in the modern era, epic, ground breaking, genre-spanning (and defining) pieces... but let's go back in time a little.
Actraiser (SNES):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0j9FF6QmiWM
Actraiser's soundtrack was really impressive for the time, with themed pieces for each location and some almost orchestral scores. It really helped create a mood and atmosphere for the game.
Wipeout 2097 (Playstation):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T0ng-CJ2lk
Wipeout 2097 was possibly the main reason I bought a Playstation in the first place, a combination of adrenalin-pumping racing backed by a thumping soundtrack. While the soundtrack is most notable for it's inclusion of Future Sound of London, Chemical Brothers and the Prodigy, IIRC this was one of the game's original tracks and one of my favourites.
I actually still own an original Playstation and a copy of the game, safely stored away for a rainy day.

It would be remarkably remiss of me not to mention one of - to my mind - the most haunting and captivating soundtracks of all time: the deliciously wicked score for American McGee's Alice, composed by former Nine Inch Nails drummer Chris Vrenna.
"Time to raise some havoc... the dogs of war are loose."
