Favorite Bands/Music
Since we have a topic here about just about every other form of media, I thought we could use one on music.
My top 5 favorite bands:
1. Blind Guardian: A German band that plays mostly clean-vocal metal (with a few ballads) and play music based on literature and folklore.
Example: Time Stands Still (At the Iron Hill) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aB6CPyO0Ww
--This is from their album about the Simarillion, specifically the part about Fingolfin challenging Morgoth to single combat at the Siege of Angband.
2. Kamelot: Technically from Florida, but practically an international band by now. They play a similar style of music to Blind Guardian, but have a much more gothic theme to their songs.
Example: Ghost Opera https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zptA7MmxK2Q
--The music video tells the story of the song pretty well, so I won't mention it here.
3. Symphony X: Another American band. They play progressive metal with a lot of symphonic elements (duh).
Example: Church of the Machine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBqfbCFcPTo
--The Control ending makes me think of this song.
4. Masterplan: German band. Pure power metal with one of the absolute best vocalists ever. Music to get pumped-up to. If you are familiar with Gurren Lagann, think of that in musical form.
Example: Spirit Never Die https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUunegkN2FE
5. Nevermore: American band, sadly defunct now. In terms of tone, they are almost the opposite of the previous band. I have yet to hear a genre descriptor for them that fits well enough to actually describe their sound. I can say their guitarist is goddamn amazing, and their singer does anguish better than anyone.
Example: Psalm of Lydia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUQusWJb8UQ
Your turn, fellow ITists!

Re: Favorite Bands/Music
I'm into math rock, noise, drone, hardcore indie rock, post-rock, punk rock. Will post some of my favourite bands later.
As for EDM, I'm reeeeeeeeally into dubstep at the moment. Bring on the WUB WUB!
I also really like slow jazz and vocal jazz when I'm in the mood. I play Motown to get in a happy mood.
I listen to acid jazz on hot summer days.
And I grew up listening to AC/DC, which I still dig, especially the old Bon Scott albums.

Re: Favorite Bands/Music
Oh my. Music.
Well I'd love to say I like all music, but it simply isn't true. I'm extremely picky. In very strange ways.
I like a wide variety, but very specific selections across the board. And I usually tend towards the brutally heavy and chunky side. But I have a soft spot for even some Pop and Rap music, and a particular love for several pieces of Classical. And Jazz always gives me a smile.
I also consider movie and game theme music to be 'music'. And currently its nearly all to a very high standard, with Mass Effect being particularly enjoyable (obviously).
Regardless, here are a few examples. Some are amazing regardless. Some I will admit freely are utter garbage - but I love them anyway. And these genres are pretty loose at times.
Death Metal:
Amputated
Cannibal Corpse
Death
Fleshgod Apocalypse
Gorguts
Satan's Revenge on Mankind
Thrash Metal:
Slayer
Testament
Black Metal:
Anaal Nathrakh
Burzum
Emperor
Gorgoroth
Immortal
Drone:
Earth
Khanate
Merzbow
Sunn O)))
Progressive Metal:
Blotted Science
Cynic
Whatever It Feels Like At The Time:
Mr Bungle
Dubstep:
Nero
Electronic:
Funker Vogt
...ah bugger it. Too tired. You can just have those examples, tainted with my bias towards Metal.

Nevermore has got to be one of my favorite bands, I'd highly suggest checking out warrel dane's solo work, as its pretty damn slick too :D
to add to the list?
Check out "into eternity" a canadian metal band, a little growly at spots, but i loves them :D

Re: Favorite Bands/Music
My favourite band of all time is probably System of a Down. I'm pretty sure I went a bit hipster with them at some point and now own everything they've ever done.
Early Marilyn Manson, love Queens of the Stone Age, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Ellie Goulding, Missy Elliot, Slipknot, KMFDM, Wumpscut. That sort of thing. I will happily listen to most things, but those in particular get me excitable.
Hate loathe and despise jazz and Lady Gaga/any artist that gets shoved down my ear canals.

I actually have Warrel Dane's solo album Jeff Loomis's solo work is pretty awesome, too, even without vocals.
I'm not too big on the growling either, but that song was actually pretty good.
I don't know if you have heard of Wintersun--a lot of ITers have because of their song "Starchild"--but their harsh vocals don't bother me.

Re: Favorite Bands/Music
Boy, quite a few dedicated rockers here. Compared to that I'm much more random.
Although the only band I'd really call an absolute favorite would be Pink Floyd. But more of the Gilmourian Floyd. Haven't listened to a pure-Waters album.
After that, there's always other 70's rock I can enjoy, like Led Zeppelin.
Then there comes the whole disco and 80's synth stuff that I can listen to for hours without getting tired.
And finally Electro. I especially enjoy it as background music, keeps my heart in rythm. In particular, progressive trance, psychadelic trance, dance and house. Sometime also minimal, like the works of Paul Kalkbrenner. Also, Deadmau5 and Daft Punk.
Oh yeah, and Tchaikovsky is also good to the ears.
So hear we go, not so confined in some genre. But not because I have so low standards, it's more because I honestly most of the time get tired of listening to only one style of songs.

Yeah I could still listen to 80's or 90's hip hop everyday....where it actually was hip hop. Also, now I have to go rewatch old Ice Cube videos.

Heaven Shall Burn - One of 3 bands that I can listen to without getting tired of. Love their stuff.
Artas - Austria band I believe, good up and coming band. Reminds me a lot of Heaven Shall Burn ... maybe that's why I like 'em.
The Agonist - Good band with a girl who can sing and scream pretty well. Your Coming With Me, best song by them off their newest album.
Other bands that I listen to: Five Finger Death Punch, Icon For Hire, Corpus Christi, Children of Bodom, Amon Amarth, At The Throne of Judgement, Blackguard, Caliban.

Re: Favorite Bands/Music
Beyond REM I mentioned above, I really care more for individual songs and pieces of music more than bands.
Though there are exceptions as I am currently listening to the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Symphony, a fan made 3 hour orchestration of the Twilight Princess soundtrack. Beautiful stuff.
Also Final Fantasy IX has one of the greatest soundtracks ever in a game with my absolute favorite being "You're not Alone." Some of the tracks are criminally underused sadly with great tracks such as "Hunter's Chance" and "Feel my blade" being used only once or twice in the game.

If ME3 was a pop album it would be M83's Hurry Up, We're Dreaming. It even has similar imagery in the videoclips, including glowing children, indoctrinated eyes, and the Mass Effect arc.
Surprised nobody mentioned it before. Also it was one of the awesomest albums of 2011.
