The Witcher 3

Post by NebuchadnezzaRT on Mon Aug 19, 2013 11:19 pm

So, am I the only one hoping the guys over at CD Projekt RED publicly announce that they won't pull a "Mass Effect" with their endings?

Not that I doubt CDPR, I just don't want anymore ending lies from developers for awhile Angel

Context: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/125067-The-Witcher-3-Features-36-Alternate-Endings

Anyways what do you guys think about TW3? I can't wait!

I don't see them pulling an Ass Effect.  That was epic levels of EA douchebaggery, and that's exactly the type of thing that CDPRED is vocal about abhorring.  We're talking about guys who release a patch to remove all DRM from their games after they've broke even.  Surprise dickery ending to their trilogy... you'd need to have a gun to their heads to make them do that, I think.

I agree Rif, too bad my computer isn't powerful enough to run their games; I'll have to play it on one of the next-gen consoles - and most likely pay for any DLC Unsure

But, I certainly am glad there are companies like them out there.

If on Xbox, probably so. =/ Microsoft hates free anything. But I doubt there'll be any paid DLC if CDPRED has any say in it. Remember when they released the Director's Cut for W2? Said that companies charge too much for DLCs and released a... what was it, 12 gigabyte DLC for free?

Although I was quite surprised how little content there was for such a size. Not that I'm complaining of course. I'd have happily paid $15-20 for that DLC. I was just surprised that such a colossal patch was only 2 new quests in Act III.

Heavy Witcher 2 spoilers to follow, for anyone that hasn't played it, don't click the spoiler. Witcher 1 too if my random musings take me there.

Spoiler:
Although I think new quests should've taken place in Act I or Act II. Act III made no sense. You were on a tight schedule, and that was the entire reason that you couldn't both aid Roche/Iorveth and rescue Triss. It was silly that there was still side quests you could do, but it even sillier adding a big story in the Director's Cut about Geralt chasing treasure or trying to solve Temeria's political douchery. Why can't I help Roche/Iorveth and save Triss, but let the labyrinth or forest go?

Oh well. As complaints go, that's not a big one. Just the biggest one I have with Witcher. On one hand, we want difficult choices. Bioware almost never gives us any truly difficult choices. I consider the Witcher 2 choices to be too hard. Usually after I examine an issue from every angle I can think of, I can make a decision and stand by it happily. I can't do that with Witcher 2. Act I, I can't justify chosing Iorveth over Roche. I simply cannot. It is without justification. I was totally with the squirrels in Witcher 1. Those guys were different. Witcher 1 squirrels were freedom fighters who wanted equality. Witcher 2 squirrels are fucking terrorists, plain and simple. Iorveth is the worst kind of scum. But... Iorveth's path is so much better. Instead of helping Henselt... okay, you know what, I take that back. Iorveth is the second worst kind of scum, Henselt is the worst kind of scum. If you side with Roche, you end up helping the worst person in the entire game and Aedirn falls because of it. You never even really meet Saskia, who is the most awesome character. But if you side with Iorveth bin Laden, you instead get to fight the good fight with men of character. Henselt faces something that's worse than death for him: defeat and humilation. You can tell when he's giving the order to surrender that he'd rather have died a warrior on the battlefield than do what he's doing. He is a broken man. And that makes me so happy that I can't stand up in mixed company. Everything is better if you go with Iorveth... but how do you justify it besides 100% metagaming?

Act III. You either save the only true hier to the Temerian throne, and Temaria with it (or), Saskia, the only leader in all of the Witcher universe worthy of her station and at the same time stop a demented, power-hungry evil sorceress with a mighty dragon under her control... orrrrrrr, you save the woman that has been Geralt's love interest for the entire series thus far. And one of the very few LI's I actually liked. I mean, I don't care for any LI in either Mass Effect or Dragon Age. They're all meh to me. Triss was wonderful though. Geralt has to either leave the woman he loves to a brutal and terrible fate, or countless strangers. What a horrific choice.

Granted, Letho saves her anyway and makes it kind of null. But again, it's total metagaming. And even then, if I let Letho save her, I feel as if I owe Letho on a personal level and can't raise my sword against him. And I really want to raise my sword against him. That fuck has cost countless lives and is the reason that Nilfgaard is butchering their way across the North. Although with Director's Cut, now a whole new group of people suffer. They realized that Letho made the choice null, so now Ambassador Dickweed incites an anti-mage riot because apparently he's Cullen in another life. So we see mages being brutally murdered, the women raped, all being given impalement, the absolute worst form of execution I know of. Ugh. This is an impossible choice.

Witcher 1 didn't have this. There was no decision in the game I really found difficult. Squirrels all the way, Triss all the way, save as many innocents as possible. No regrets. But DA2 drags my morals across a field of red-hot coals. I'm both scared and excited to see what Witcher 3 will make me chose.

Interesting post Rif, here are my thoughts:

Spoiler:
I sided with Iorveth on my first play through without meta gaming. Granted I came out of Witcher 1 where I had supported the squirrels before that which probably influenced my choice, but I nonetheless sided with him without knowing what came next. Even so I did not like him as much as Roche at first and my siding with him was strictly for the cause he fought for, not for his sake.

Even so I actually came to like Iorveth in my own way. Sure he was not a pretty character, but few are in the Witcher universe and even Saskia will call him a murderer. But at the same time he was intelligent enough to have realized that the squirrels could not win in the way they fought till then and try another path.

Though on that note I would not call either Iorveth or Roche the "worst kind of scum." They are far up the list, no doubt there, but Loredo is probably the absolutely worst scum shown in the game.

I can completely agree that I love Saskia though. It is nice to see a character who genuinely wants to do good in a Witcher game. Her being a dragon on top of that is just a massive bonus, especially since a pet peeve of mine is how dragons in video games usually boil down to "rahaha, I am going to kill you!" with little if any indication of deeper intelligence.

Even games who supposedly have intelligent dragons rarely do show that in proper though, especially hated Skyrim in that regard. All the dragons there are supposedly of incredible intelligence yet all but 2-3 never really show any of that. They are just random encounters who say a word or two at times...could they at least have used some of these supposedly intelligent dragons for side quests?

Anyway back to the Witcher. In the Witcher 1 though I was squirrel for my first play through I also like taking no sides in the conflict as you essentially end up helping the king quell both sides of the conflict in order to restore peace.

Yo dawg, I put some spoilers in your spoilers so you can get spoiled while you're being spoiled.

Spoiler:
I supported the squirrels 110% in Witcher 1 too.  Yaevinn was a good man.  He hated humans, but he didn't let it influence his actions.  He wanted non-humans to be treated like people.  He wanted to stand on equal ground with humans.  Iorveth wanted to stand on a mass grave of humans.  His claimed to be fighting for an equal realm later on, but in Act I he's just a murdering coward.  His knife-ears hide in trees and murder berry pickers whose only crime is being human.  Iorveth's character is summed up perfectly in a conversation if Geralt sides with him at the elven garden but before ending Act I.  When Geralt talks of going to the town to try to stop the race riot and save Triss, Iorveth tells him "Geralt, we can't go there.  The garrison..."  Geralt says, disgusted, "Right.  I forgot what kind of 'warriors' you are."  There it is right there.  Iorveth is a coward, plain and simple.  He has no interest in picking on anyone that can fight back, just slaughtering women and children who happen to wander into his crosshairs.  He's no better than Loredo.  They deserve each other.  They should've shared a set of crosses.

His "men" are no better.  They knew damn well if Geralt supported the squirrels in W1.  They still attack on sight.  That whore Malena is another good example.  Even when you help those filth, they still try to kill you.  Just fucking because.  I always rat her out now.  Send her to Loredo to be tortured, raped, and killed.  It's what she deserves.  It's what most squirrels in W2 deserve.  There's nothing in common with their W1 counterparts besides the name.

Spoiler:
LOL.  There is nothing wrong with Roche.  People accuse him of being racist, but I have never once seen a shred of evidence to that end.  They say he's a racist just because he hunts filth like Iorveth.  That's like calling soldiers fighting al-qaeda racists because they're hunting arabs.  It has nothing to do with their race, it has to do with them being terrorists.  Roche is aces.  Loredo is no worse than Iorveth.  Henselt edges them both out, but only due to having the power to commit more atrocities.

Spoiler:
I really don't care for the neutral path.  Anything beats the Order of the Flaming Hitlers path though.  If there's one faction I hate more than DA's Chantry...  Anyway, there's lots of characters in the Witcher universe who want to do good.  Most of them are fairly powerless though.  What sets Saskia apart is her ability to do something about it.

Even though I'm not a Witcher fan, I do feel bad for those who are. On the plus side, that gives them a few more months to polish the game.

Word of warning, preordering from Gog.com seems to charge you for the game immediately unlike most preorders.  So if you're tight on cash, it could cause some problems.  Fortunately I already had the money but it was kind of a surprise.

I thought about getting the CE, but $150 is really pricey.  And when Gog said that ordering there is the only way to directly support CDPR, that sealed me on the regular one.  Gog doesn't have the CE because it's only digital stuff.

No no, of course they get a cut.  Just that Gog being their own store, there's no middleman there.  They probably still make a bunch more from you buying the CE from Synthesis! Gamestop Synthesis! than me buying the regular one from them directly.
