I mean.... come on. It's complete and utter bollox. Parody for parodys sake. Yeah lets make a shapard clone. WTF? ok this raise the possibility that shep himself might not be all he appears to be. Stealing the normandy? who cares? we're all going to die shortly and I havent got time to be chasing my fecking ship across the universe for no fucking reason at all but to make moar money for a company that apparently doesnt even know what a fucking story structure is.
You know what they say Bioware 'The customer is always right'.
more of this shit and you dont deserve any more of my money.
This. Citadel is garbage.

I wouldn't call it garbage per se, but it certainly has no place in the narrative. It sticks out like a sore thumb and flaunts it.

“Kalahira, mistress of inscrutable depths, I ask forgiveness.
Kalahira, whose waves wear down stone and sand--
Kalahira, wash the sins from this one,
and set him on the distant shore of the infinite spirit.
Kalahira, this one's heart is pure,
but beset by wickedness and contention.
Guide this one to where the traveler never tires,
the lover never leaves, the hungry never starve.
Guide this one, Kalahira,
and s/he will be a companion to you as s/he was to me.”
Tell me that isn't the Citadel DLC setting in a nutshell.

Bolded.
From Ashes = Eh... *groggy head*
Extended Cut = Nevermind...zzzz... wait, something's not quite right...
Leviathan = Wait, what was wrong? I have to ...think harder..
Omega = Oh yeah! I was in a battle, a war! But...
Citadel = But... but something... NOW I REMEMBER, *picks Destroy*
One doesn't 'need' any of the DLC, but they each carry a message, and work progressively (alll IMO, of course) to help Shepard break past what he's experiencing and wake up. The DLC all represent the process of this self awakening, something the Reapers (and maybe Leviathans?) don't want him to do.
Main games = Leads you into a story, narrative
DLC = Leads you into a more developed understanding of it
And the Thane bit + doing Citadel DLC (plus a bit more stuff, most likely), means you've opened a 'plot element' (not sure what else to call it) of Shepard's 'spirit journey' towards 'spiritual/mental awakening'. Bonus points if you're FemShep and romanced Thane.
Of course, one can ignore Thane (I think not even recruit him?), and not even get/do Citadel DLC. As a result, this whole 'plot element' doesn't even exist. It's up to you how much you want to 'unlock' of the Mass Effect story.

We're still fucking missing the actual post-awakening content though, damn it...
Sure, Shepard still takes his breath like always, but then what? Then fucking what? lol
At most there's Dem's idea that there are some slight hints of future content within Citadel DLC, but the hints are so vague (arena level art and names?, Rio?, some dialogue?) that it doesn't exactly detail much. All I've guessed is that we may make a jump to Dark Space and strike the evil at its root... maybe?

ok. my opinion for what it's worth.
The game should be an enclosed story. Millions of people paid to experience shepards final chapter (supposedly) and were given nothing short of a rushed out ripped apart piece of shit. Indoctrination Theory is easily the best interpretation of the ending because it is so bleeding obvious. But many felt the need to vent and rightly so.
Bioware gets the fan backlash. Fans cry foul - unfinished game - day one DLC ripped out of the game for profits sake. and they were right. Game content of an actual product should not be ripped out of the game for profit purposes. Javik was even on the fucking disc ffs.
Amazon sees this and issues refunds. The game was clearly not sold as advertised.
Red/Blue/Green. Thanks Casey you cheesy dickhead.
anyways back to my original point.
The story should have been Mass Effect 3 as sold. It should have contained everything important to make sense of the story and finish the narrative. It didnt.
DLC to finish a story is the most unforgiving shit stunt ever. I can understand exploration DLC or weapons DLC but story DLC? and pivotal to the whole story DLC?
Fuck Off Bioware. Try this stunt again and i'm done with you. Money Grabbing Barstewards.

Yep. I'm easily of a plural mindset when it comes to this.
One hand - wow, this is actually a damn neat idea if I'm *right*. *light applause*
Other hand - DON'T YOU FUCKING PULL THIS AGAIN. This is like... my Dragon Age 2 lol. "Pull another ___ and you'll never see another cent from me, and even EA purchases in general will at least greatly suffer" kinda thing.
I get the concept of telling a story from many different angles, POVs, complexity based on choices in the series and which DLC bought and which sidequests done and which Codex entries read... but it's just downright disrespectful and assholeish to not finish off things properly. PROPERLY.
They can still go "Hey, you wanted elaboration on how this happened? Here's some DLC with a more developed explanation." but to do what they did had better be a 'one time only' strategy or they really may be doomed. Don't toy with customers too much, regardless of artistic integrity (note I didn't put quotes over that, because if I'm somehow right, they DO have some artistic integrity... just no business sense ;))
